Friends Indeed Gallery presents Conspirateurs, the first solo presentation of all new paintings by Eamon Ore-Giron in the San Francisco Bay Area. The works on view are a continuation of the artist’s Infinite Regress series, paintings that marry the aesthetics of indigenous and craft traditions with 20th-century avant-gardes, seeking to rethink the canon of Western art history. Using a vocabulary of universal shapes and forms found at the root of human language, Ore-Giron reveals the possibility of a dialogue across time and cultures. The works employ strategic combinations within a precise visual motif to move this conversation along a visual journey that is both familiar and new.
The title of the exhibition, Conspirateurs, comes from an 18th-century board game invented after the French Revolutionary Wars, a period of urgent political activity much like today. The point of the game is to bring as many people as possible into sanctuary by moving pieces, that represent people, to the periphery of a gridded board. Colored spaces at the center of the board offer secret meeting areas for revolutionaries in hiding. Ore-Giron’s painting can be understood as being comprised of architectural forms. He sees the golden circles and arches in his works as analogous to the sanctuaries in the game; they are resting places for the circles of color, the geometric protagonists that move across his canvas. Each painting has fixed points and various elements, and the viewer is invited to decode the works, interpreting and assigning meaning to their interactive and exponential nature.

Inspired by beloved San Francisco-based basement dealer Steven Leiber's practice of using mail art to disseminate information about artists and exhibitions, Ore-Giron has produced a special ephemera to be sent to people through the United States Postal Service (currently under threat from the Trump Administration). Ore-Giron conceived of this edition to offer audiences, especially those who are unable to see the show in person, the opportunity to experience the paintings through alternative sensory dimensions.
Eamon Ore-Giron (b. 1973, Tucson, Arizona) received his M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles and B.A. from San Francisco Art Institute. He has exhibited his work, as a solo practitioner and as part of collaborative endeavors, at numerous international locations, including: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Prospect.3 New Orleans; LAXART, Los Angeles; 500 Capp Street, San Francisco; Pérez Art Museum Miami; PEANA, Monterrey, Mexico; Ballroom Marfa, Texas; OFF Biennale, Cairo; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City, and more. He was recently included in the seminal exhibition SOFT POWER curated by Eungie Joo at SFMOMA. His work is in the public collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, SFMOMA, Kadist Art Foundation, and Pérez Art Museum Miami, among others. This Fall 2020/Spring 2021, he will have an artist residency and show with the Anderson Collection at Stanford University. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
